Your Mechanic Can Be a Valuable Asset When Purchasing A Used Car

Car dealers are not particularly well liked, and knowing as many of them as I do, I can understand why that might be the case. I run an import shop in Florida that specializes in late model luxury imports. I’ve been in business for quite some time, and I have heard plenty of horror stories from customers regarding other dealerships. In my opinion, I think the majority of car dealerships one will encounter are reputable, by and large. I say “by and large” because some dealers I know use nickel and dime methods to maximize their profits, which I disagree with. Personally, I would rather give the customer a quality auto at a fair price and consequently gain a lifetime customer, but that’s a topic for another article.

One of the more recent horror stories I heard involved someone who had purchased a vehicle that was leaking oil. For those of you that know anything about cars, you know that this is nothing to be taken lightly. The customer was assured by the dealership that this older, yet low mileage used car was in pristine condition. Here’s where it gets interesting… Before the sale, the customer asked if she could have the car inspected by her mechanic. The dealership did everything they possibly could to keep that from happening, and succeeded. They told her that they would have their own mechanics do a “twenty point inspection” which would save her the time and expense of having her mechanic take a look. Unbelievable! Since the customer parked her car on a busy street where there were already several oil spots, she never noticed the leaking until after her ridiculously short thirty day warranty was up.

Her mechanic would have spotted an oil leak the minute he had the car up on the rack. As disheartening as this story is, there is a valuable lesson to be learned here. Car buyers, unless they are dealing with a dealer they are familiar with and whom they trust, should seriously consider having a mechanic check out any used car they are interested in (preferrably the local certified manufacturer dealer of the automobile make they are considering). I have had several first time customers ask me if they can have the car independently inspected and I am always happy to oblige. Take my word for it, the only dealers who would frown upon independent inspections are those who have something to hide.

Year One For First Honda Fuel Cell Vehicle Lease To

Year One For First Honda Fuel Cell Vehicle Lease To Customer

June 29th marks the first year anniversary of the very first vehicle that is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. In fact, this vehicle is the first of its kind in the world to be actually leased to an individual retail customer and it bears the name Honda FCX. This is the announcement given by American Honda Motor Co., Inc. And Honda is celebrating this event.

The vehicle powered by a hydrogen fuel cell has been leased by Honda to the Spallino family who is actually based in the Los Angeles area. Jon Spallino is the person who has signed for the lease and uses the FCX. He comments, I am surprised at the amount of attention and rubbernecking received while driving the FCX. Despite being a developing technology, we have not suffered from any reliability issues and the car has all the comforts and conveniences we need.

The Spallino family uses the Honda FCX on their everyday drives to their daily activities. In fact, the vehicle has already traveled a couple thousands of miles already. The trips have been largely made to the supermarket, to the Spallino childrens soccer practices, as well as the daily commutes to their workplace. The family has been constantly stopped though by the public who has been very interested about their experiences in riding such a car. Some would even blatantly ask to have a ride in their Honda FCX. But after twelve months, the family is no longer surprised by these actions.

On the anniversary of such a lease, Gunnar Lindstrom says, The lease of the Honda FCX to the Spallino family demonstrates the real-world viability of fuel cell vehicle technology and its ability to meet the needs of a family on an ongoing basis. Honda will continue to evolve and refine hydrogen vehicle technology based on feedback from real world customers, and well see that expressed in future models. Lindstrom is the senior manager of Hondas Alternative Fuels Sales and Marketing department.

When All You Need is Space

Made available in three trims, the 2006 Volkswagen Golf is a vehicle that has the capacity of five passengers maximum. This vehicle sports four doors and is a family sedan. Its trims range from the GL 2.0 sedan to the GLS 1.9 TDI. When this vehicle was first introduced, the GL 2.0 sedan came equipped with a standard 2.0 liter, I4 engine that could produce 115 horsepower, thus taking 24 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. Standard is a five-speed manual transmission with overdrive, and given as an option is a four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. On the other hand, the GLS 1.9 TDI comes with the standard engine that is 1.9 liter, I4 with a production of 100 horsepower. It is a turbo diesel engine with overdrive as standard. It can take 37 mpg in the city while 44 mpg max for highway driving and cruising.

The 2006 Volkswagen Golf has been made available with a hatchback version of the Volkswagen Jettan sedan. Both of these vehicles have the same design generation. The sporty GTI is a hatchback with two doors. The Volkswagen Golf offers GL and GLS trims with a 115 horsepower and 4 cylinder engine. These vehicles come with standard anti lock four wheel disc brakes, front torso side airbags, head-protecting curtain side airbags, traction control, and an anti skid system.

In truth, the 2006 Volkswagen Golf has already been on sale in Europe for eighteen months before it was introduced in United States showroom. In comparison, the Volkswagen Golf and the Volkswagen Jetta essentially is the same car from its parts like the front bumper up to the third roof pillar. What differs is that the Jettas rear window drops down to the trunk lid while as in the case of the Golf, its roof continues further towards the back of the vehicle, with hatchback access made from the rear. This vehicle carries more cargo volume, and better access to storage space. And, yes, the Volkswagen Golf costs much less than the Volkswagen Jetta.

As per the Volkswagen Golfs predecessors, this new one is 2.3 inches longer, one inch wider, and 1.5 inches taller that has paved the way for more space in its interior. This new vehicle also carries with it crash protection that highlights front, side impact, and head protection airbags that are standards for this model. There are also redundant controls for the stereo and climate adjustments on the steering wheel hub. The gauges are also trimmed with chrome rings as well as the cabin which is trimmed with aluminum. As per the Volkswagens seats, they are made to be hefty and well bolstered.

Volkswagen Golf parts and Volkswagen parts can be found at Auto Parts Onlines online store.

In a nutshell, although the Volkswagen Golf has its low points like a low acceleration, and less automatic-transmission performance, this vehicle still outshines because of its spacious cargo room, great build quality, excellent fuel economy, comfortable ride, excellent visibility and quality interior materials.

What Exactly Is Dealer Invoice?

My first answer to that would be who really knows? Its a very elusive term thrown around by about all the car manufacturers and car dealers marketing departments. You know after many years in the business, Im not sure I could tell you precisely what true dealer invoice or what is termed dead cost is on any particular vehicle. Im sure the owner or the ownership group could somehow calculate this elusive dollar figure but most of us humans will continue to search for the ever elusive animal we refer to as dealer invoice.

To say this term is a bit misunderstood is a rather large understatement. Maybe thats why it works so good for the folks in the marketing department. Many potential car buyers assume that what they uncover on the internet is the car dealers invoice price. Well, not really. Its certainly one heck of a lot closer than checking the MSRP of a give vehicle, but it probably isnt going to be dead cost.

You hear it all the time. In fact right here where Im at there is a local dealer that says all youll ever pay is $50 over factory dealer cost; and they have been selling cars this way since day one oh so many years ago. I guess it shouldnt, but it really baffles me how this works on the consumer. Just do the simple math; if this dealer sold 300 cars a month (about 10 cars a day!) times $50 over factory cost (the inference here is that you are paying $50 over what the dealer gets the car for) this dealer would be grossing $15,000 per month on new car sales. I can unequivocally tell you that this would never cut the mustard! Think about it $15,000 a month and this dealer hasnt even paid rent, utilities, insurance, salaries, benefits, and on and on. So, $50 over factory invoice not hardly.

So what is it then this thing car dealers call cost or invoice? Well, its a bunch of numbers being added subtracted multiplied and divided before anyone knows the dead cost of the car for the dealer.

Whats a consumer to do?

Getting out on the internet and doing your homework is a very good start. The exercise of comparing the information you gather is a good one and is to your advantage if you want to start your negotiations at invoice price. Which, by the way, you NEVER negotiate from the sticker price down.

While doing your research on dealer invoice prices its important to make certain you are comparing exact features and option packages to one another. This will at least give you baseline comparisons with which to work. All car dealers receive different incentives from the manufacturer; factory to dealer marketing incentives dealer holdback, and on and on. The fact that much of this is not disclosed is why it is very difficult to come up with dead cost for the car dealer.

For instance, in the case of dealer hold back; the dealer doesnt even get this money until after the car is actually sold.

There are other expenses that the dealer has that are applied to the overall cost of a particular car, including how long a particular car has been sitting on the lot. You see the dealership finances their inventory and as such pays interest on this financing so a car that has been sitting on the lot for some time has cost the dealer more than the ones that they are just unloading from the truck.

As you can see, there are too many variables to any particular car at any particular dealership to know exactly what the dealer has put into a car in terms of cost. However, as we talked earlier, doing your research on the invoice price is a good place to start. Just dont stop there thinking you have all you need and dont need to do any further negotiating on the selling price.

Purchasing cars and negotiating is almost synonymous. Getting a good feel for the invoice price is just a starting point. Now its time to roll up your sleeves and work on getting the best possible price you can.

During the life of your car assuming you plan on keeping your vehicle for many years you could easily go through 8, 10, even 15 or more air filters. K&N, for example, sells a line of air filters that are warranted to last one million miles, can be cleaned as little as once every 50 thousand miles, and are emissions legal in all fifty US states. Prices for reusable air filters range from as little as $30 to approximately $60 or more.

For the owner of a car who keeps his vehicle for 150 thousand miles not uncommon these days he could easily replace his filter twelve times during the life of the car. If he pays $12 per air filter an average price his expenditure is $144 for the life of the car.
